ATEP Student goes to Greece with CSMF Study Abroad Program Cody Chinn a Sophomore and rising Junior Athletic Training Student spent this past years spring break on a College and Sports Medicine Foundation Study Abroad Trip to Greece.
While on the CSMF Study Abroad: Greece trip, I was able to see/learn more than I ever expected to. By day, we were bussed around the country stopping at various sites and normally checking into a hotel by 6 at night. I was able to visit three very memorable as well as historic Olympic stadiums: The venue in Athens used for the 2004 Summer games, the stadium built for the first modern Olympics held in 1896, and last but possibly most important, the ancient stadium at Olympia herself. I saw the temple dedicated to Asclepios, the god of medicine.
While at the temple I learned how ancient medicine was more of a public relations scam than an actual service. I was also able to connect with other Athletic training students from all over the USA and develop lasting relationships that I am positive will benefit us all as we enter our careers. This trip was as memorable as it was beneficial; I learned the origins of the profession, made networking contacts, and generally had the experience of a lifetime (such as running a footrace in the ancient Olympic Stadium). I highly recommend participating in this program whether a student or staff, they go to Italy!
